  4. Country Description:  New Zealand is a highly developed stable parliamentary
  5. democracy which recognizes the British monarch as sovereign.  It has a
  6. modern economy and tourist facilities are widely available.

  8. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  A visa is not required for
  9. tourist/business stays of up to three months, and visitors must have
  10. onward/return tickets and a visa for the next destination.  Proof of
  11. sufficient funds may also be required with prearranged accommodations.

  17. Medical Facilities:  Good medical care is widely available.  Doctors and
  18. hospitals may expect immediate cash payment for health services.  U.S.
  19. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United States.
  20. Supplemental overseas medical insurance, including coverage for medical
  21. evacuation, has proven useful.  The Medicare/Medicaid Program does not
  22. provide payment of medical services outside the United States.  The
  23. international travelers hotline at the Centers for Disease Control (404) 332-
  24. 4559 has additional useful health information.

  26. Information on Crime:  Crime in New Zealand is comparatively low but has
  27. increased in recent years.  Foreign visitors, including those from the U.S.,
  28. are seldom victims of crime.  The most prevalent incident is occasional
  29. theft or attempted theft.  The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport
  30. should be reported immediately to the local police, and the nearest U.S.
  31. Embassy or Consulate.  Useful information on guarding valuables and
  32. protecting personal security while traveling abroad is provided in the
  33. Department of State pamphlet, "A Safe Trip Abroad."  It is available from
  34. the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office,
  35. Washington, D.C. 20402.

  37. Drug Penalties:  Travelers are subject to the laws and legal practices of
  38. the country in which they travel.  Penalties for possession, use, or
  39. trafficking in illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect
  40. jail sentences and fines.

  42. Registration:  Americans who register at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate can
  43. obtain updated information on travel and security within the country.
